Sitting in a dark place

Must we live in the dark to see the light?

The Measure of a Failure

How will I measure my success–
with a micrometer?
in milligrams?
by percentages of pennies?

Can it be weighed
by the lint in my pockets,
the mold on my walls,
the air in my gas tank?

Will it be a list
of the jobs that I’ve lost,
of the plans that have failed,
of the dreams that went bust?

Are there measurements
for missed opportunities,
lack of ambition and passion,
for melancholic regrets?

Or is it simply seen in the lackluster
look in the eyes of my wife
staring at spaces between
the cans on the shelf?
