NaPoWriMo Day 15

Day 15 [10:15-11:00 pm]
Radio (www.dearabbyisdead.com/category/napowrimo2016/)

My Radio

There’s nothing clearer
than the static
of a transistor radio,
rolling your thumb up and down
the ridged edge of the dial,
tuning from station to station
to hear the best in country music
or the latest rock;
the monophonic tones
from that small black plastic box
setting on the back bumper
of the family station wagon,
Ernie Harwell announcing
the runs, hits, and errors
of the Detroit Tigers–
Al Kaline, Mark “The Bird” Fidrych,
Willie Horton, Aurelio Rodríguez—
and the occasional distant crack
of bat meeting ball;
the muffled buzzes, squeals, and hisses
under the blankets late at night
trying to listen in on the world outside
(more than once
I found a Mexican broadcaster
speaking Spanish between the static).
I painted a mural of the inside
of  that radio on a wall
in my room in the basement—
each tiny transistor and diode and resistor
and 9-volt battery included.
I believe it’s still there.
